March 8th is International Women’s Day. It is a global day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a call to action for gender parity around the world.
This year’s theme is Be Bold for Change. As you pray this day, remember the needs and achievements of women around the world and ask God to help you be bold as you walk in solidarity with women.
Gracious and loving God, God of the marginalized, be with us today as we pray for women around the world. We know that globally, women and young girls are oppressed and abused every day.
In some parts of the world, women and young girls are pushed into forced marriage; are forced to have genital mutilation; are living a life of prostitution to survive; are trafficked for sex; are left to die if pregnancy or delivery is complicated; lack the opportunity to receive education; and these are just the obvious cases. There are countless ways in which women are. Even in our own country, we read statistics that say one in three women are abused. Everywhere, we know that women and young girls live in poverty.
God, you call us to be your hands and feet. Allow us to be your hands and feet as we walk in solidarity with women everywhere. Let us speak out for women who have no voice. Let us advocate for women who are powerless. Let us mourn with women who mourn and those that suffer. Let us be generous with our time and money as we aid women in need.
We pray for all women who are oppressed or imprisoned. Bring them comfort and safety. Help us to remember them, not only today, but everyday.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
