Greater Love

I am sure many of you have been busy raking leaves. The trees in the Toronto area have lost most of their leaves, leaving our lawns, driveways, and roads covered. So, why do leaves fall? Why are we blessed with brilliant red, orange, and yellow leaves?

Basically, the leaf sacrifices itself for the tree.

When the sun is shining, leaves make food for the tree. But when our days shorten and our skies are more often grey, the leaves cannot provide.

When the ground freezes and trees lose their water source, the leaves actually take nutrients from the tree through the water the tree stores.

When leaf-eating insects lay their eggs and larvae in the Autumn, the leaf becomes damaged.

God and nature realize that the leaf’s job is over so the tree protects itself by letting go and letting the wind carry the leaf across the ground.

You might be wondering what connection leaves have with Remembrance Day?

Today we remember the sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for their country, their families, and their friends. Like the leaf that lays down its existence for the tree’s survival, many men and women lost their lives so Canada’s future could thrive.

Unlike the leaf that has become useless to the tree, the men and women who have, and continue to serve our county, have great worth.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for one’s friends.” (John 15:12-13)

According to Jesus, the primary proof of obedience is love for one another. We are called to sacrifice. Take time today to remember those who laid their lives upon the alter and ultimately yielded to Jesus command.

May God help us to serve as Jesus asked—with a heart full of passion, justice, and love.

“The fallen leaf perishes; but those who serve in the name of Christ will never perish: for he gave his life that we might live with him forever. What a price! What a victory!”

Love and sacrifice. Jesus Christ set the highest example. The soldiers who sacrificed their lives so that we can have peace also showed us their love for humankind. Thank you, Joy, for this lovely reflection for Remembrance Day.
